Mitti, shisha aur ek purani kahani
Lippan, also called Lippan kaam, comes from the Kutch region of Gujarat. The word comes from "lipan", meaning to plaster or coat a wall.
For generations, families in Kutch decorated the inside walls of their round mud homes, called bhungas, with raised clay patterns and tiny mirrors.
Local clay was mixed with natural materials and shaped by hand into raised patterns.
Tiny mirrors pressed into the clay caught the lamp light and lit up the home at night.
Closely linked to Kutch communities such as the Rabari, often made by the women of the home.
Today Lippan lives on in wall art, decor and gifts across India.
Peacocks, elephants, camels and geometric patterns framed with tiny mirrors are classic Lippan motifs, and you'll find them in our Lippan covers.
